EdTech Tulna as a 3-Part Solution
EdTech Tulna is an evidence driven evaluation index that aims to reduce information asymmetry in the ecosystem about the quality of product design - and seeks to build a shared understanding of what good EdTech looks like. It has been built by researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B), a premier higher education institute in India, and supported by Central Square Foundation.
Scope of EdTech Tulna
EdTech Tulna caters to the extensive EdTech landscape in a nuanced way by providing product design standards and software evaluation toolkits for the PreK to 10 segments across:
- Multiple EdTech use-cases (personalized adaptive solutions, digital classroom, assessment, etc.),
- Multiple domains (mathematics, english, sciences, etc.)
Standards
The EdTech Tulna standards define “what good looks like” for the design quality of EdTech products. They are categorized along three dimensions: Content Quality, Pedagogical Alignment, and Technology & Design to capture a holistic view of the quality of the product design.
Offering for Institutions
- The Challenge:
There is an information gap in the EdTech ecosystem regarding the quality of existing products in the Indian landscape. To make high-stakes procurement or investment decisions, institutions need a way to demystify the quality of EdTech software. - The Offering:
EdTech Tulna provides standards for EdTech use cases and domains, which can be leveraged to make evidence-led decisions. For example, use EdTech Tulna standards as technical evaluation criteria in the procurement process.
Offering for Product Companies
- The Challenge:
Despite investing heavily in research and development, EdTech adoption decisions are not evidence-based. The different types of evidence can also make it challenging to compare EdTech product quality. Additionally, generating independent third-party evidence on a product can often be time-consuming and expensive for product companies. - The Offering:
EdTech product companies can get a free third-party evaluation done to get (i) rich insights and feedback on the quality of product design and (ii) gain access to a platform to signal the existing quality of their product to the market for better adoption. For example, use EdTech Tulna standards to benchmark your product design.
Toolkits for Evaluation
In addition to standards, EdTech Tulna also has robust and validated evaluation tools that can support to conduct holistic evaluations of the product design of EdTech products. Bespoke training can be provided to build the capacity of evaluation teams to effectively use the evaluation toolkits.
Offering for Institutions
- The Challenge:
For meaningful quality-led selection decisions on EdTech solutions, institutions require in-depth and independent evaluations, tailored to their specific needs (for example evaluations for decisions related to procurement vs. decisions related to investments). - The Offering:
EdTech Tulna provides robust and reliable evaluation tools to support with conducting independent evaluations of EdTech products for high-stakes decisions such as during EdTech procurements, investing or grant-making. For example, leverage the training and capacity building support provided for your evaluation teams running the decision-making process.

Published Evaluations
EdTech Tulna conducts independent expert evaluations of existing EdTech products against EdTech Tulna’s standards and publishes these reports available for public consumption
Offering for Institutions
- The Challenge:
There is limited information for the different EdTech products in the PreK-10 segment and the parameters to consider when selecting a high-quality EdTech solution. - The Offering:
EdTech Tulna’s evaluations directly fills the information gap in the EdTech ecosystem and can be used as an indicator of product quality. For example, leverage the public reports to identify best-fit solutions for your procurement decisions.
Offering for Product Companies
- The Challenge:
Given the depth of the EdTech landscape, there is limited visibility of high-quality product companies among the right audience. - The Offering:
Our public evaluations offer an independent, third-party, free review on product design, which signal the product quality of your solution in the EdTech ecosystem. You also have the opportunity to share your evaluation response and EdTech outlook with critical decision-makers.
